THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF TOASTMASTERS
by Khalid Jalal, Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM)
Program Quality Director (PQD) – District 20 (2024-2025)
Public speaking has always been a daunting task for many, including myself. The fear of standing in front of an audience, the anxiety of delivering a speech, and the pressure to communicate effectively can be overwhelming. However, my journey with Toastmasters has been nothing short of transformative, helping me develop my communication skills, conquer my fear of public speaking, and refine my style of delivering keynote speeches. This journey has ultimately enabled me to become a professional and paid speaker at various conferences and occasions.
When I first joined Toastmasters, I was apprehensive about speaking in front of a group. The supportive and encouraging environment of Toastmasters clubs provided me with a safe space to practice and improve my speaking skills. The structured Pathways program offered a clear roadmap for my development, with each project designed to build specific competencies. Through consistent practice and constructive feedback from fellow members, I gradually gained confidence and honed my communication abilities.
As I progressed through the Pathways program, I discovered my unique style of delivering keynote speeches. Toastmasters provided me with the tools and techniques to craft compelling narratives, use vocal variety, and incorporate body language effectively. These skills were instrumental in shaping my delivery style, making my speeches more engaging and memorable.
One of the highlights of my speaking career was delivering a keynote on “Entrepreneurial Ideation” during the COMEX summit in Bahrain in October 2023. The audience comprised individuals from all over the GCC, and the experience was both exhilarating and rewarding. My keynote was well-received, with participants appreciating the content and delivery style. This success was a testament to the skills and techniques I had learned through Toastmasters.
In my keynote, I shared insights on the process of ideation in entrepreneurship, emphasising the importance of creativity, innovation, and strategic thinking. I discussed various methods for generating and evaluating ideas, as well as the significance of fostering a culture of innovation within organisations. The positive feedback from the audience reinforced my belief in the value of the skills I had acquired through Toastmasters.
Becoming a professional and paid speaker was a natural progression from my Toastmasters journey. The platform provided me with the confidence, skills, and experience needed to excel in the world of public speaking. The opportunities to speak at various conferences and occasions have been both fulfilling and enriching, allowing me to share my knowledge and insights with diverse audiences.
I wholeheartedly recommend Toastmasters to anyone looking to develop their communication skills and overcome their fear of public speaking. The structured Pathways program, supportive community, and regular speaking opportunities make it an ideal platform for personal and professional growth. Taking the learning seriously and actively participating in club activities can open doors to real stages outside of Toastmasters, enabling individuals to make a meaningful impact in their respective fields.
In conclusion, my journey with Toastmasters has been a transformative experience that has equipped me with the skills and confidence to excel as a professional speaker. The photos above (taken at the 100th anniversary celebrations in Anaheim, California) representing District 20 as its Program Quality Director is a testament of that continuous journey.
The platform has not only helped me develop my communication abilities but also provided me with the tools to inspire and influence others through my speeches. I am grateful for the opportunities and support that Toastmasters has offered, and I look forward to continuing my journey of growth and development.
